Mission Statement

Just Food is a NYC based non-profit organization that addresses regional food & farm issues. We work to build a more just food system. This means, for example, that family farmers should be able to make a fair profit for their efforts, on the one hand, and on the other hand, all people should be able to buy affordable, healthy food. It also means that farming & gardening techniques should focus on ecological methods that protect nature's resources, as well as the urban & rural people that live off these resources. Just Food thus fosters new marketing & food-growing opportunities that address the needs of regional, rural family farms, NYC community gardeners, & diverse NYC communities. We build partnerships among diverse groups to tackle these issues, advancing dialogue and action on farming, hunger, nutrition, ecological sustainability & justice issues. We also provide resources, training and training opportunities to community groups, farmers & gardeners.

Description

Our main programs are CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in NYC and The City Farms. CSA in NYC organizes communities to build direct market partnerships with rural farms. CSA helps to support family farms that are struggling to stay in business, while providing city people, particularly in low-income neighborhoods, with access to good, affordable produce. The City Farms program works to increase food production, marketing and distribution via community gardens throughout NYC. We partner with other NYC groups that have expertise in these areas, and together, we offer workshops, training materials, and networking opportunities for NYC communities and help to build the community food security movement.
