Mission Statement

Global Citizens Network seeks to create a network of people who are committed to the shared values of peace, justice, tolerance, cross-cultural understanding and global cooperation, to the preservation of indigenous cultures, traditions and ecologies, and to the enhancement of the quality of life around the world.

Description

Global Citizens Network (GCN) provides short-term cross-cultural immersion and service learning expeditions to Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Nepal, Thailand, Tanzania and Kenya as well as to Native American reservations in Minnesota and Washington. Program costs range from $1,200-$3,025. Airfare is additional and all trip-related costs are tax-deductible in the U.S. Projects could include building a health clinic, renovating a youth center or teaching in the schools. No specific skills are required, only a willingness to experience new cultures. Trips are one, two or three weeks in length and run throughout the year.

Would you recommend Global Citizens Network?

I participated in a GCN volunteer trip to Mexico over the Christmas and New Years holidays and had an incredible time. One thing I liked about the experience was that GCN's philosophy really focuses on a mutually respectful partnership with the local communities that they work with. That means that it isn't about outsiders coming in and telling the locals what needs to be done. It also means that cultural exchange plays an important role in these trips. Not only did we help an indigenous woman's cooperative build a casita, but we also had a chance to see other parts of the area, including touring a sustainable agricultural cooperative. I also appreciated that GCN really takes care of its trip participants. A trip leader comes along on the trip and manages the financial and trip details, as well as language translation, and I always felt well taken care of and safe, which is helpful when traveling to a developing country. I would highly recommend GCN to anyone.
