The New York Open Center is a non-profit, holistic learning institution committed to expanding the minds and hearts of people everywhere through a carefully curated holistic curriculum.
Founded on the belief that we are all connected through our words and actions, the Open Center strives to build a community committed to positive interaction, mutual respect and love.
In its 28 years, the Open Center has become the largest urban holistic education institution in the world. It has reached more than 400,000 participants and offers over 500 innovative and pioneering programs annually in five subject areas: health and wellness; authentic spiritual traditions from around the world; psychology and self-development; creativity and the arts; and society and ecology. The program roster includes professional trainings, educational lectures, short-term workshops, international conferences and cultural events.
The Open Center operates a bookstore with unique and hard-to-find publications, a meditation room open free to the public, and Wellness Services in integrative and complementary health modalities.
Our teachers comprise many of the world’s leading thinkers and authors, a number of whom found an early public platform at the Open Center. These include luminaries such as Andrew Weil, M.D.; Mehmet Oz, M.D.; Karen Armstrong; Deepak Chopra; Julia Cameron; Thich Nhat Hanh; Rupert Sheldrake; Marion Woodman and many others.
The Open Center is the only organization of its kind in New York City, offering the broadest array of holistic classes--and in doing so has become a unique and essential cultural institution.
My experience at the New York City Open Center has been a wonderful one since day one! The Open Center is an amazing organization where motivated people come to learn and grow. I have had the pleasure of meeting incredible individuals and taking helpful courses that have enriched both my personal life and have enhanced my business. I find myself excited to come to the Center each week. The Open Center has a wonderful healing energy; it is a great place to meet others while giving back to the community.
After taking a really great foot reflexology training program with Wendy Coad at the Open Center, I decided to become a volunteer in the Wellness Department ...that was over 4 years ago and I am still enjoying the work, people and atmosphere. As a thank you for your time you are given certain discounts as well as the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes at no charge as a classroom assistant. Some of the professional trainings require you to pay 50% but it's still a great deal. Responsibilities vary in each class but it's always interesting and worthwhile. One of my recent favorites was learning about Vegetarian Ayurvedic Cooking with Divya Alter ...priceless! I've also taken classes in Tai Chi, dance, writing and herbalism, and met many current authors. I was also able to join the OC on a trip to Italy and a cruise to Bermuda which included trainings. I remain truly grateful as I could never have experienced all of this without the Open Center.
I discovered the Open Center soon after moving to New York about a year and a half ago, and I've been volunteering there ever since. In short, I love it there. I am interested in all things holistic, and the Open Center caters wonderfully to my interests.
The staff and other volunteers are terrific - kind, passionate and fun people. I look forward to my four-hour shift every week, as I've become close with several of the Open Center crew.
The classes at the Open Center are outstanding, and as a volunteer I've been able to take a bunch of courses, and for free!
I can't say enough good things about the Open Center and see myself volunteering there for a long time to come.
