Mission Statement

Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational, grassroots, non- profit Christian housing ministry. We are committed to providing decent, affordable houses in partnership with God's people in need. Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat's goal is to eliminate poverty housing -- one house at a time -- until there are no more shacks, no collapsing tenement houses, and no homeless people sleeping in the streets. Habitat build houses in partnership with families who cannot qualify for a loan from a conventional lending institution. We use donated funds and donated labor, and we keep cost low. We sell our houses to partner families with no profit added . We loan partner families the money to buy their houses at zero percent interest. Partner families repay the mortgage note over 15 to 30 years. Partner families participate in the construction of their own homes. Habitat is about people helping people: building relationships; building community . Millard Fuller speaks of the Theology of the Hammer: people may disagree about many aspects of their religions, but they can agree on using a hammer and building houses as an instrument to manifest God's love.
