Mission Statement
Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are responsible for protecting the safety, rights, and welfare of participants in human research. The University of Kentucky (UK) IRB consists of a diverse group of members with varying backgrounds to promote complete and adequate review of research activities. The UK Office of Research Integrity (ORI) administers the UK IRB and we are recruiting volunteers to serve as "community" members of the board. These are individuals who are non-scientist and/or unaffiliated with UK.
Description
The UK IRB must have a nonscientist member present when reviewing proposed research at a meeting to ensure there is appropriate representation for those who do not have specialized knowledge in the research subject matter. Those unaffiliated with UK are preferred as they represent the public and serve the community’s interests rather than the university’s. Community members should be able to attend most meetings (every 3 weeks), have basic computer skills, and have an interest in helping facilitate ethical human research. For more information, see the ORI website under "Nuts and Bolts of being an IRB Member". Interested candidates may email ORI Associate Director, Pam Stafford at pastaf3@uky.edu.
