Mission Statement
At LEAF, we believe in a world where every community has the knowledge and resources to work in harmony with nature to cultivate a healthier planet. Our urban gardens serve as living classrooms, soil science labs, and community spaces that empower people to learn, connect, and grow together. Through hands-on programs, we educate people about healthy soil and caring for the planet, grow and share nutritious produce with those facing food insecurity, advance soil science through community-based research, and foster meaningful connections between people, food, and the land.
Description
Local Ecology and Agriculture Fremont (LEAF) is a Bay Area, CA-based volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating people about healthy soil and caring for the planet, growing and sharing healthy produce with people facing food insecurity, advancing soil science, and connecting people to food, the land, and each other. Founded in 2008, it uses its two urban gardens as living classrooms, soil science labs, and community spaces that empower people to learn, connect, and grow together. LEAF serves youth, families, and underserved communities in Fremont and the surrounding Tri-City area through workshops, classes and summer programs, partnerships with food banks and educational institutions, and community events.
In 2024 alone, LEAF hosted over 70 educational events with more than 2,400 participants, donated 5,335 pounds of fresh produce-including 1,351 pounds of gleaned fruit-to local food banks, and facilitated over 7,500 hours of volunteer service. From summer programs for youth and training for the visually impaired to collaborative soil health research with UC Davis, LEAF continues to grow a healthier planet from the ground up.
