Mission Statement

The Giving Grove’s mission is to provide healthy calories, strengthen community, and improve the urban environment through a nationwide network of sustainable little orchards.

Description

The Giving Grove, founded in 2013 in Kansas City, began as a grassroots effort to turn underused urban spaces into community-led orchards. The program equips residents with trees, materials, and training to grow and maintain sustainable orchards in their neighborhoods.

These spaces have become vital urban green areas-improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, and lowering urban heat. Led by local volunteer stewards, our orchards use holistic, pesticide-free practices that enhance soil health and biodiversity. Their efforts ensure the orchards thrive while also building intergenerational connections and strengthening community bonds.

Beyond food production, the orchards serve as outdoor classrooms, providing hands-on education in environmental stewardship, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture for all ages.

Since its launch, The Giving Grove has expanded through partnerships with local nonprofits. Today, the network includes over 650 orchards in 16 U.S. markets, cared for by more than 1,200 volunteer stewards. Together, these orchards are expected to produce more than 64.5 million servings of free, healthy food over their lifespans-while also contributing to carbon capture and climate resilience.
