Mission Statement
Our mission is to serve the changing needs of our community through innovative library services. In the age of advanced technology and content gratification, the HCL serves an important role, providing trusted resources and value-added services and programs to our rural area. The HCL strives to provide opportunities, resources, and connections for our community to learn, discover, and create. We are a community champion that capitalizes on forward movement with new ways of doing and thinking. The HCL is the champion and change agent as community needs and interests evolve.
Description
Hamlin Community Library (HCL) is a non-profit public library, located in Wayne County, the rural northeastern corner of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We have operated as a nonprofit, free public nonsectarian library since 1969, and were incorporated in 1980. The HCL was once known as the Salem Public Library and was located in a restored railroad station parish house of a local church. The current building housing the HCL was constructed in 2006 to meet the evolving needs and interests of the community. The HCL serves for the benefit of the general public, particularly for the residents of South Central Wayne County, as well as nearby Lackawanna County, encompassing a population of approximately 10,000 people. The HCL is governed by an elected, volunteer Board of Trustees. The daily operation of the organization is maintained by a Library Director who leads a staff of 4 part-time employees and 30+ volunteers. The HCL maintains an active membership as 1 of 7 public libraries in the Wayne Library Authority (WLA) and engages in mission-critical activities to serve the community. Additionally, the HCL supports the Wayne County Comprehensive Plan and Wayne Tomorrow! initiatives to further advance the values of public libraries.
