Mission Statement

Teaching While Queer works to create inclusive schools by advocating for LGBTQ+ educators, students, and families, ensuring that every teacher can teach authentically, every family belongs, and every child learns in a safe, affirming environment.

Description

Teaching While Queer is a nonprofit organization and podcast that believes LGBTQ+ educators deserve spaces where they can thrive-not just survive. Founded by Bryan Stanton (they/them), a queer theatre educator and advocate, Teaching While Queer amplifies the voices of LGBTQ+ educators, challenges systemic barriers in schools, and builds community through storytelling, advocacy, and accessible resources.

Since our launch in 2023, we've released over 30 podcast episodes featuring queer teachers, professors, counselors, and administrators. We've led workshops on inclusive teaching, hosted virtual events, and grown a national network of LGBTQ+ educators through social media and newsletters. We’re currently planning the first-ever Queer Educators Conference (October 2025) and preparing to publish our first book: Teaching While Queer: Queer Educators on Power, Pedagogy, and Possibility.

Our mission is rooted in care, joy, and collective liberation. We're looking for passionate volunteers to help expand our reach-especially in digital spaces-so that more queer educators can find support, community, and tools to live and work as their authentic selves.
