Volunteer Facilities Manager

Flexible Schedule | Newton, MA 02465

Location: West Newton, MA (On-site volunteer role) Time Commitment: Flexible, ideally a few hours/week with availability during daytime hours to meet vendors The West Newton Cinema Foundation is seeking a hands-on, community-minded Volunteer Facilities Manager to help us maintain and care for our beloved historic cinema. This is an ideal role for someone with a practical understanding of building systems who enjoys working behind the scenes to keep a place running smoothly. You’ll act as our primary point of contact for coordinating with service providers and contractors across a range of facility needs. We are not looking for someone to perform technical work themselves (though small handyman projects are welcome if you enjoy them!) - we are looking for someone with good judgment availability during the day, and a solid knowledge base to help us manage vendors and ensure we're receiving appropriate services and fair pricing. Responsibilities: Coordinate with vendors and contractors to address ongoing facility needs Meet on-site with service providers during business hours as needed Assist with scope definition, evaluate service estimates, confirm appropriate paperwork is completed prior to start of work. Ensure quality work is being performed Monitor and coordinate maintenance of small building systems including: Plumbing: sinks, toilets, grease trap maintenance Electrical: lighting, basic troubleshooting HVAC: oil boilers for steam and hot water, air conditioning Internet: WiFi and basic connectivity troubleshooting Building & Grounds: leaf/snow removal, exterior lighting, small repair needs Manage and oversee small facility projects Ideal Candidate: Reliable, organized, and enthusiastic about supporting a community resource\ Good communicator, comfortable speaking with vendors and reviewing quotes Basic working knowledge of building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.) Available during some weekday daytime hours ABOUT US The West Newton Cinema Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to establish the West Newton Cinema as a hub of enjoyment and community, where mainstream, classic, independent, and unconventional films enrich lives, expand horizons, and strengthen connections to the world. MISSION: Our urgent goal is to restore and renovate the West Newton Cinema - addressing long-deferred maintenance - to preserve this historic cultural landmark. Looking ahead, our mission is to brighten the lives of Newton residents and beyond by giving the community a place to connect, learn, and enjoy through innovative and engaging film programming.
