Mission Statement
Did you know that 1 in 5 underserved households are not getting their kids involved in athletics because of the rising price of sporting equipment? Leveling the Playing Field (LPF) is a nonprofit that collects and redistributes equipment to expand access and equity within youth sports and recreation programs in under-resourced communities to keep ALL kids in play!
Description
Over the past few decades, the privatization of youth sports has led to a decline in public recreation and interscholastic athletics, and a rapid increase in registration fees across the board. This phenomenon is known as the "pay to play" model. This reality has led to a growing inequity divide as illustrated in a recent Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) survey that reported only 38 percent of kids from families with a household income of $25,000 or less are playing team sports, contrasted with a 67 percent of kids from homes with annual incomes of $100,000 or more.
Our Southeast Michigan warehouse, located in Detroit's Islandview Neighborhood, opened at the end of 2024. Volunteers have been instrumental to getting this warehouse up and running, sign up to volunteer with us today to make sure no kid is left on the sidelines.
