Mission Statement

Black Girls Do Science focuses on introducing underrepresented girls to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) with workshops primarily led by women of color. By empowering and exposing girls to explore a path in STEAM, we are working to reduce its racial and gender gaps

Description

When we launched Black Girls Do Science in 2013 n the state of Iowa, we sought to dispel stereotypes of what a scientist is supposed to look like and to celebrate the scientific achievements of successful women of color. Our mission iss to empower and expose girls to explore a path in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). Our programming includes 1 day STEAM Workshops and Virtual Speaker Series where our STEAM volunteer professionals call into 4th-8th grade classrooms as a way to educate and inspire all students to pursue STEAM careers. We have served 2000 participants and impacted 50+ classrooms with testimonials ranging from former girl participants who became successful adults in STEAM fields to current girl participants only wanting to pursue careers in STEAM fields. We'd love you to volunteer your time as volunteer or a board member as we grow our reach into Michigan and beyond! Come help us show that Black Girls Do Science!!
