Mission Statement
AT OrigiNation, we use innovative dance and theater programs to cultivate self-esteem, ethical leadership, employment and career readiness, health and wellness among Boston youth between the ages of 3 and 18. Our programs are open to all youth who meet our age requirements with an emphasis on lower income families from the underserved neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan.
Description
Having begun in 1994 as a summer program with an initial enrollment of 4 girls, OrigiNation quickly attracted over 20 interested students and parent volunteers after its first week. We serve about 150 girls and boys ages 3-18 annually through 4 key programs: (1) Professional Dance Division; (2) Performing Arts Program; (3) Spring Dance Intensive; and (4) our Ready, Set, Dance! Summer Intensive Program. We serve an additional 1,500 youth through our Community Outreach and Education Program and International Youth Empowerment through the Arts Tours. We also produce two theatrical productions annually which feature our students and youth from outside of the Origination community: (1) In 2002, Our Story - A Celebration of the African- American Experience through Spoken Word, Music, and Dance and (2) In 2012, Tafuta! A Young Boy’s Search for the True Meaning of Kwanzaa. Including our audiences, OrigiNation serves roughly 4,500 youth and youth arts supporters per year.
