One day project clearing trail up to Rattle Ridge with views of Lake Pend Oreille This one-day project takes place on the Mud Creek Trail near Beetop Roundtop Trail. We’ll start at Lightening Creek Road and hike 5.6 miles, gaining 2,400 feet of elevation to reach Rattle Ridge. Along the way, we’ll enjoy stunning views of Lake Pend Oreille, the mountains and valleys of northern Idaho, northwest Montana, and even British Columbia. We’ll be focused on clearing the trail and performing maintenance tasks to keep this scenic route in top shape for future hikers. It’s a great chance to enjoy the outdoors while giving back to the trail system. Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions. Trails: Mud Creek Trail #559

ITA’s Veterans Program provides a supportive environment where active duty and retired ser-vice members can engage in mission-focused public land stewardship. This program offers veterans the opportunity to learn valuable trail maintenance skills while finding camaraderie with fellow veterans who share a love for the outdoors. Nestled in the heart of the Coeur d’Alene Mountains along the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River, the Stateline Trail stretches from Lost Creek Campground to the Montana border. We’ll be car camping at Lost Creek Dispersed Campground, which has a toilet, while clearing logs along this beautiful ridge trail up to Taylor Saddle. The trail was recently maintained by the Forest Service, ensuring regular upkeep. On day one, we’ll drive to the top of the mountain, work our way down, and shuttle back to camp in the evening. On day two, we’ll hike up from the campground, finishing what we can before hiking back to our cars and heading home.

Just south of the Canadian border, this trail begins in one of the largest tracts of intact old-growth forest in the Pacific Northwest. This three-day project will take us to American Falls, located at the northern terminus of the Idaho Centennial Trail, which stretches about 1,000 miles. We’ll hike down the Continental Trail #28, then perform bridge repair, rock work, tread maintenance, and other tasks on Trails #308 and #28. This remote area of the Idaho Panhandle is home to endangered species like the grizzly bear and woodland caribou, along with black bears, deer, moose, and mountain goats. The project offers stunning views, including a 40-foot cascade at American Falls, which marks the river's entrance into the United States.

One Week at Heart Lake: North Idaho's Most Breathtaking Hidden Gem ITA will spend a week working and camping in the beautiful and remote Mallard Larkin Pioneer Area in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. These trails have become difficult to hike through with the amount of brush and downfall, and this area has many options for backpacking or horse packing trips that should be preserved! We’ll meet US Forest Service packers and their pack string at the trailhead, and they will help bring in gear and tools to a base camp. From here, we’ll continue working each day further down the trail, returning to base camp each evening at the lake to swim or fish after work. ITA worked here in 2022, opening the trail to Northbound Lake, where the crew completed over 4 miles of brushing and log out. Featuring mountain peaks, meadows, and alpine lakes, this area is also known for its diverse wildlife. Don’t let the long drive discourage you from exploring this beautiful area, it’s well worth the journey! More info is available on All Trails . Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project.
