Mission Statement
The Writers Grotto is a community of working writers and narrative artists who connect in physical and virtual space, pooling our talents to support each other, mentor and teach others, and engage the wider world. The Grotto fosters a literary culture that is generous in spirit and deeply inclusive, elevating writers of all backgrounds.
Description
Established in 1994 by writers Po Bronson, Ethan Canin, and Ethan Watters, The Writers Grotto began as a shared workspace in a six-room flat in San Francisco. Over the years, it has expanded to include 150+ professionals-authors, journalists, poets, and filmmakers-dedicated to storytelling.
Mission and Goals
The Grotto fosters a supportive environment where writers connect, collaborate, and thrive. It promotes mentorship, inclusivity, and engagement with the broader literary community.
Programs and Opportunities
- Rooted & Written: A free program mentoring emerging writers of color across poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting.
- Classes & Workshops: Public offerings on memoir, fiction, nonfiction, and more, for all writing levels.
Achievements
Members have authored bestsellers, written films and TV shows, and received honors like Pushcart Prizes and Pulitzers. Notable members include Caroline Paul (The Gutsy Girl), Julia Scheeres (A Thousand Lives), and Noah Hawley (Fargo).
Volunteer Opportunities
