Mission Statement

The CCI exists to inspire everyone who has stared down environmental justice to live fuller life with newfound strength and purpose. Our mission is to advance change in Sun Valley and surrounding disadvantaged communities heavily impacted by decades of neglect and environmental pollution, to ensure equitable access to clean air, policy makers, supporters, and the communities we serve. The CCI strives to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities to improve the health and lives of people affected by lack of essential resources. We want to bring communities together to help families build strength, stability and self-reliance through community outreach programs, health studies, education, and leadership. We are committed to doing everything in our power to close the need gap, eliminate racial, socioeconomic, and other disparities, promote healthier communities, protect basic human rights, and provide access to resources by raising awareness and partnerships.

Description

The CCI is grounded in our collective firsthand experiences working with, living in, and serving frontline communities for years, and on the climate change and environmental justice scholarship. The lack of representation of frontline communities in climate change research, adaptation strategies, and mitigation policies has deep historical roots in NE San Fernando Valley. For decades, the most vulnerable communities have been subjected to unjust policies founded upon racism, lack of awareness, and underrepresentation, especially against socioeconomically depressed communities. We strive to build an organized base of community members fighting to change the political, social, and economic conditions that create environmental and racial disparities. We actively take part in community events, townhalls, meetings affecting not only disadvantaged communities but Los Angeles in general, as we believe that the well being of disadvantaged communities directly affects people’s well being on a much larger scale. We aim to create community-based solutions to dismantle systemic conditions of environmental exploitation and racism by action and enforcement
