Mission Statement
* The Autistic Art Coalition Of Philadelphia provides a safe space for individuals who are autistic, neurodivergent, and or intellectual disability, as well as individuals with all different disabilities. This is an Autistic Run group. We teach art at two different locations within Philadelphia. One location is in Tacony and the second location is in Chinatown. Easy accessible to all SEPTA, PATCO & NJ Transit. Everything that we do is free for the participants of all ages from Open Studio, Workshops, Community Celebrity Teacher, or Art Exhibitions - we have two rules, no drama and to be mindful of personal space.
Description
From the very start, this group has done things differently than other groups. One because we're autistic run, this group was started at the heels of the pandemic. During a time when art groups did not exist for the autistic population because the pandemic had white things out. Our founder had gotten word that there was an individual being bullied for being autistic. In true Philadelphia for our founder said oh hell no, took all of her lived experiences and created the Autistic Art Coalition of Philadelphia from scratch. At the time, then there were two board members who were CAPS certified Autism peer specialist gets a job for autistic individuals only to then be able to provide peer support to youth, young adult, and adults who are also autistic. The founder of * The Autistic Art Coalition Of Philadelphia is a retired emergency medical technician among other jobs that she had throughout her lifetime. Taking all lived experiences, including jobs she was able to help make this a nonprofit with the help of her support worker, and the pro bono lawyer, from Philly Vip, who helped do everything, including bylaws, the handbook, everything. Board members gave them their input as well. The basic goals of this group is the set a goal to step out of your comfort zone. Come in to class/open studio and work on art as a community. In some areas of The Autistic Community that would be working on social domain - being in the public.
