Mission Statement

Since 1946, Fight For Sight has supported and inspired eye and vision research by funding promising scientists early in their careers.

Description

Fight for Sight was founded in 1946 by Mildred Weisenfeld, a young woman faced with a degenerative blinding eye disease, who was shocked to learn that research into the causes and cures of vision diseases and disorders was virtually nonexistent. Her efforts were instrumental in the creation of the National Eye Institute, a divison of the NIH, as well as several university eye research centers. Today, Fight for Sight is internationally recognized for its role in identifying, nurturing, and supporting promising scientists early in their careers. Since its founding, Fight for Sight Awards Program have funded more than 3,000 student and post-doctoral fellowships, and grants-in-aid at more than 170 leading eye centers and universities in the U.S. and internationally. For many young scientists, the recognition and support that this, their first eye research award, provides, is a much-needed first step to a successful career in academic ophthalmology and eye research that leads to major advances in curing and preventing blindness.
