Mission Statement

We live in the Information Age, yet thousands of New York State students drop out or graduate with weak literacy skills every year. We are committed to advocating, raising awareness, educating, and legislating about the social and economic injustices caused by illiteracy and how to address them. We advocate for students in crisis, including low-income families and those in foster care, by collaborating with school districts to ensure they receive the evidence-based reading and writing instruction they are entitled to. We promote and organize evidence-based literacy instruction to ensure more students are on a college-ready, job-training, or career trajectory. Our campaigns push to prioritize and fund life-changing, evidence-based reading instruction for people who have graduated or previously dropped out of school with weak reading skills.

Description

Hi,

We are seeking a grant specialist to help us get funding to advocate for children in foster care.

Did you know that according to the New York State Education Department, 86% of children in foster care have weak reading skills, and many are functionally illiterate? Can you imagine having no parents and, on top of that, school is like torture? Additionally, children and adults are 80% more likely to recover from trauma when they can read. Literacy is trauma-informed care, and we believe that children in foster care deserve an education; they deserve a better future.

We work with education attorneys and partner with school districts to build capacity and professional development while ensuring our students are on a college-ready or job skills training trajectory. We ensure they receive a proper evaluation and science-based remediation. We track their progress and emotional wellness to ensure our students experience meaningful progress and become engaged in their educational careers.
