Mission Statement
Manufacturing Renaissance advances sustainable development anchored in manufacturing.
Description
Founded by Dan Swinney in 1982, Manufacturing Renaissance (MR) initially provided technical assistance to the Harold Washington Administration, labor, and community groups fighting manufacturing plant closures that devastated Chicago’s west and south sides. For 38 years, MR has been a leading advocate and practitioner of policies and programs that use manufacturing to reduce poverty, expand inclusion, and sustain middle-class communities.
Today, MR advances sustainable development through manufacturing, offering solutions that can improve economic outcomes for low-income, Black, Latino, Indigenous, and other BIPOC communities.
MR operates across two program areas:
Career Pathway Services - Prepares youth and young adults for career-track employment and apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing through Manufacturing Connect (in-school youth), Young Manufacturers Association (young adults), and Instructors for Advanced Manufacturing (teachers).
Manufacturing Ecosystem Services - Strengthens manufacturing’s role in community wealth-building through technical assistance for small-medium manufacturers, ownership succession support prioritizing local, BIPOC, and women entrepreneurs, and policy advocacy led by the Chicagoland Manufacturing Renaissance Council to promote manufacturing as a tool for economic development.
