Mission Statement

There are immense challenges to having Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a detrimental neurodegenerative disease, resulting in physical therapy and many other resources being needed to ensure enough support for an affected individual. Sadly, these needs are not always met. Whether it be the financial strain of treatment, the mental health toll, or limited understanding of the condition in an individual's environment, each can limit the life of one with SMA. Our organization, SMA Outreach and Awareness Resource (SOAR), aims to remedy these problems by providing comprehensive support, advocacy, and access to critical resources..

Description

Our organization was founded by the brother of an SMA individual named Justin, who witnessed firsthand the numerous challenges faced by those living with the condition. Despite having access to both medical and emotional support, Justin’s journey is still far from easy. Recognizing that not everyone is fortunate enough to have the same supportive environment, this brother joined forces with a dedicated team of officers to create a platform that provides comprehensive assistance to the SMA community. Together, they aim to improve the lives of individuals with SMA through a variety of impactful programs, addressing both emotional and practical needs. In partnership with SMA Vietnam, we raised funds to support underprivileged individuals with SMA in Vietnam, where the higher value of the dollar ensures financial aid has a significant impact. In 2024, we successfully raised funds for Lunar New Year gifts for SMA children in Vietnam, brightening their celebrations. Beyond financial support, we focus on emotional well-being through awareness campaigns and support initiatives. During SMA Awareness Month, our campaign reached over 200 people, sharing inspiring interviews with individuals affected by or supporting the SMA community. Currently, we are launching a buddy program to foster meaningful connections and emotional support for children with SMA.
