Mission Statement
PS aims to shift societal views on stuttering - through multimedia storytelling, community engagement/education, strategic communications, and advocacy - where the very idea of "normal" speech is undone. By building a more inclusive and visionary narrative and effectively communicating core assumptions that will help society understand stuttering as just a different way of speaking, not something that has to be fixed - our goal is create a world where people who stutter feel safe and empowered to be unapologetically themselves.
Description
Proud Stutter’s (PS) uses storytelling, arts advocacy, and strategic communications to change the status quo story and amplify a more representative story about stuttering. Our work expands the frame of the stuttering story to be inclusive of all types of people who stutter with an emphasis on people from historically excluded identities (BIPOC and LGBTQ+). We accomplish this by having voices from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds on our award winning podcast, Proud Stutter, which leads to a more nuanced understanding of stuttering which benefits people who stutter and their loved ones. Another strategy is activating social justice and disability-led organizations and groups to act and join the conversation around speech diversity.
