Mission Statement

Our mission is to protect and uplift the James Howe House as a tangible reminder of the history of slavery and its aftermath. Our vision is to empower New Jerseyans with the knowledge about our shared legacy as the last slave state of the North.

Description

In Fall of 2022, a community coalition of residents, activists, faith leaders, and more came together around a single mission: fundraise $400,000 to purchase the James Howe House. The Howe House is the first home in Montclair, NJ to be owned by an enslaved person and was listed for sale as an investment property. Our community acted quickly to preserve this monument. In February of 2023 we were successful in our efforts in not only purchasing the Howe House but starting a non-profit committed to its preservation and sharing this piece of history. We've been recognized for our work by various news outlets and organizations and are working to grow our board and organization.
