Mission Statement

Hyderabad Urban Lab (HUL) aims to foster inclusive, sustainable, and equitable urban futures by conducting research-driven, community-centered interventions. HUL’s mission is to empower communities to actively participate in shaping the cities they live in, addressing challenges such as environmental resilience, social justice, and access to public spaces. Through collaboration with local stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers, HUL seeks to create innovative, context-specific solutions that enhance the quality of life in urban environments while promoting long-term sustainability and disaster preparedness.

Description

Hyderabad Urban Lab was founded in 2012 by a group of public intellectuals as an interdisciplinary research collective dedicated to studying urbanization in Hyderabad and beyond. The organization emerged from a need to address the complexities of urban life in growing cities, particularly in the Global South, where issues such as informal housing, infrastructure, governance, and environmental sustainability are deeply interconnected.

HUL started as a small initiative but quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to urban research. It focused on integrating academic insights with on-the-ground realities, bringing together urban planners, researchers, students, activists, and community members. Its early projects delved into the intersections of urban risk, disaster management, and everyday struggles of urban residents.

Over the years, HUL developed numerous projects, such as:

  • Do Din: A festival of conversations and collaboration, exploring topics like technology, governance, and urban futures.
  • I'Local: An initiative aimed at fostering participatory design for sustainable urban spaces through community-driven ideas.
  • URVI (Urban Risk and Vulnerability Initiative): A program focused on building disaster resilience in vulnerable urban neighborhoods.

HUL also grew its expertise in child-friendly cities, urban resilience, and heritage conservation, embedding itself in the city's urban fabric.
