The Volunteer Mentor at Freedom City will play a crucial role in the personal and academic development of students. Mentors will provide guidance, support, and encouragement, helping students build confidence, set goals, and explore future opportunities. This role is designed to create positive and lasting relationships that inspire students to reach their full potential. Key Responsibilities: Build strong, trusting relationships with students, serving as a positive role model and source of support. Meet regularly with assigned students to discuss their academic progress, personal goals, and any challenges they may face. Encourage students to explore their interests, set achievable goals, and develop a growth mindset. Assist with homework, study skills, and time management, providing guidance to help students succeed academically. Plan and participate in activities that expose students to new experiences, such as career exploration, cultural events, or community service. Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator to discuss student progress, share insights, and address any concerns. Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment, respecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all students. Qualifications: Passion for mentoring and supporting youth development, especially in underserved communities. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students and build trust. Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude. Previous experience in mentoring, coaching, or working with youth is a plus, but not required. Commitment to Freedom City’s mission and values.

The After-School Program Volunteer plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of Freedom City’s after-school program. Volunteers will assist Classroom Teachers with various tasks, including supervising students, preparing materials, and helping maintain an organized learning environment. In addition to general classroom support, volunteers will work individually with students, providing targeted tutoring in reading and math to reinforce key concepts and improve academic performance. Key Responsibilities: Assist Classroom Teachers with daily tasks such as setting up activities, organizing materials, and supervising students during program hours. Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in reading and math, following the curriculum provided by the program. Reinforce reading concepts such as letter recognition, phonics, and comprehension, and math concepts including number recognition, basic arithmetic, and problem-solving skills. Monitor and assess student progress during tutoring sessions, reporting any concerns or successes to the Classroom Teacher. Engage students in interactive learning activities that are both educational and enjoyable, fostering a positive attitude towards learning. Help maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment, addressing any behavioral or academic challenges in collaboration with the Classroom Teacher. Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator and Classroom Teachers to discuss student needs, program improvements, and any challenges encountered during volunteer shifts. Qualifications: A passion for helping students succeed. Patience, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with and motivate students. Previous experience in tutoring, education, or working with children is a plus, but not required. Tutors will follow a structured curriculum designed to build foundational reading skills, with the goal of improving student literacy and fostering a love of reading. Key Responsibilities: Work with students in small groups to reinforce reading concepts such as letter sounds, phonics rules, and sight words. Follow the provided reading curriculum, including daily phonics practice and the IXL learning plan. Monitor and assess student progress, providing feedback to the Program Coordinator.
