St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation is a registered local nonprofit/charity and volunteer organization based in Ghana. The projects of the foundation are Teaching, Childcare, Healthcare, Farming, Social Work, Sports and Community Development Projects of children. The work of the foundation is carried out by a dedicated local hardworking staff and incredibly supported continuously by both local and international volunteers/interns from all over the world. We have made enormous impact in rural communities in Ghana where we work since our inception. Our Community development projects rely on the support of volunteers from around the world. Our work supports the principles of the UN Global Compact and aims to fulfill the 2030 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Overview of Each Project: 1. Childcare Being a volunteer for the Kindergarten or Preschool Program in Ghana, you'll work with the little ones attending nursery school and support them with basic education. However, many of the underprivileged education centers in Ghana suffer from lack of resources, poor facilities and staff shortages. As a volunteer, you'll get to play an important role in the lives of the little ones attending kindergarten school, where the stepping stones of a good future are laid. Since the kindergartens/ preschools are not financially stable, the staff barely gets a scope to provide attention to each kid. Hence, volunteers are needed so that every child gets adequate attention and his/her growth is fully taken care of. Apart from providing basic education, you can also support them with important life skills. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities As a volunteer for the Kindergarten/ Preschool Program in Ghana, your main tasks would be: Assist the local staff in the classroom, manage children and focus on them. Teach the children how to write their name, numbers, as well as nursery rhymes and songs. Focus on the development of fine motor skills as well as social skills. Play around with them, and keep them physically active. Volunteers mainly work from Mondays to Fridays. It starts around 7 - 8am and ends by early afternoon. Sometimes, you might have to work at the daycare, till 3 PM. Breakfast is served before 8am, after which you’ll get started with your work. 2. Construction & Renovation Project Volunteers working in the Construction & Renovation Project work will be placed in the Senya Beraku rural community. Volunteers will be working with the local people in our schools as well as construction activities over the last few years and have made a valuable contribution. By working along with the local people, our volunteers engage meaningfully with their host community, understand their needs and do the volunteer work accordingly. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities Under the community development volunteer project in Ghana, volunteers will have the opportunity to work on several construction projects. A day to day work for the volunteers under this program would include; · Volunteers who are willing to do some physical work can assist in the construction project either school building, libraries, toilet, drainage systems, community centers, ICT lab etc. Volunteers work along with local people with tasks includes paintings, brick laying, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending, plastering, mortar mixing, fetching of water, electrical works, digging drenches and bricks molding etc. Working Hours: Volunteers mainly work from Mondays to Fridays. It starts around 8am and ends by early afternoon or late afternoon depending on the progress of the work. 3. Sports/Football Coaching Project Ghanaians are extremely passionate about football and their love for the game is evident everywhere. You can see people wearing the Ghana Team jerseys and the cars on the road having the team stickers and flags. During your time as a volunteer, you can help in the development of football skills of young players. Volunteers working in the Football Coaching Volunteer project are also welcome to work in the Community Development or Orphanage Program wherein you can combine two programs. Volunteers must be 16 years or older at the time of joining the project. You need to have an open mind and a flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities The people of Senya Beraku love the game of football, especially since the community has got a brand new football stadium. Volunteers, mainly, will be required to; Assist the local coaches in their daily practice schedule with the local players. Help the students in local schools to improve their game and organize football matches. Help in the development of football skills of young players. Create a game plan for the children to make it easier for them to adapt with and learn the skills. Interact with the children and understand their problems, and help repair their weak points in the game. Note: Volunteers working in the sports/football coaching volunteer project are also welcome to work in the community development or orphanage project wherein you can combine two programs. Working Hours: Volunteers work 5 hours a day. 4. Teaching Volunteer Project Volunteers help in a wide range of subjects, including Mathematics, Creative Arts, Science, Basic English and Mathematics etc. The teaching program takes place in Nursery, Primary and Junior High Schools where volunteers initially either shadow or teach under the supervision of a local teacher. Once acquainted with the school and the curriculum, volunteers in Ghana get the chance of teaching independently. It is important that volunteers are flexible as there are a number of other tasks they can help with. These might include helping children with their homework, arranging games and activities, cleaning the classroom and assisting teachers with administrative duties. Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the time of joining the project. Participants should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Working Hours: Volunteers work 5 hours a day. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities Volunteering in Ghana requires volunteers to involve themselves in a number of activities, at the school, on a regular basis. Tasks include: Assisting the teachers to deliver lessons. Work with smaller groups helping them with their reading, writing and numeracy skills. Teach one of the classes yourself but you’ll be fully supported by a local staff if this happens. Design a proper study module for the children to follow. Involve students in out-of-the-class activities to teach them the importance of physical activity. 5. Girl-Child Menstrual Hygiene & Empowerment Project The mission of this project is to help young disadvantaged girls living in rural communities around Senya Beraku and its surrounding communities. Volunteers work in a school where the main objective is to educate the girl child in the area. Former volunteers have helped in the project substantially and have raised for the continued education and supply of essentials for the students of the school. Volunteers working in this program need not be qualified or trained teachers. The project is suitable for individuals who want to volunteer teaching on their gap year, summer placement or career break. Working Hours: Volunteers work 7 hours a day. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities Volunteering for girl education in Ghana requires volunteers to involve themselves in a number of activities, at the school, on a regular basis. This may include, but may not be limited to; · Design a proper girl-child module for the girls in order to follow without difficulty. · Involve girls in out-of-the-class activities and educate them the importance of being in school during their menstruation periods. · Improving and motivating girls on the need to abstain from unnecessary acts that may lead to teenage pregnancy and school drop outs. · Helping them know their girl-child rights and the importance of it towards their future aspirations and dreams. 6. Agriculture/Farming Project Many rural villages in Ghana rely on agriculture as their main economic activity, but they often struggle to produce sufficient food. International volunteers on farming project, along with dedicated local volunteers, play a vital role in addressing agricultural challenges and promoting sustainable practices in these communities. Additionally, volunteers actively participate in diverse projects that include vegetable gardening, livestock management, nutrition and education. Volunteers involved in this project are afforded ample freedom to pursue their specific interests within the agricultural field. Whether their passion lies in genetics and breeding, agro-forestry and conservation, or fair trade practices, volunteers have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities Helping with crops including corn, eggplants, capsicums and palms Farming animals like pigs, rabbits, goats and chickens Clearing and developing land for crops/farming Fertilizing, planting and nurturing crops Teaching farming techniques to locals Fencing Assisting with purchasing, moving and caring for stock. Working Hours : Volunteers mainly work from Mondays to Fridays. It starts around 7 am and ends by early afternoon due to the hot sun during day and continues in the evening during sunset. 7. Healthcare/Public Health Education Volunteer Project In Ghana, one of the most pressing issues facing to low-income population is limited access to essential healthcare services. A significant number of patients require medical attention due to illness related to poor sanitation, while malaria continues to pose a significant program, causing numerous illness and fatalities. By joining our medical program, interns will have the invaluable chance to acquire firsthand experience within Ghana's healthcare system. You will work together with doctors, nurses, and local healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics, striving to provide high-quality care to patients. Working Hours: Volunteer works 5-7 hours a depending on the cases at the facilities. Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities Volunteers in the Medical Healthcare program in Ghana work along with doctors, nurses and local staff in hospitals and community clinics in Senya Beraku, Ghana. Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer’s qualifications, experience and knowledge. Qualified doctors and nurses can carry full day to day treatment of various diseases. Medical professionals and students can assist the doctors and nurses in their work and observe their work to gain knowledge and experience. Qualified medical volunteers work in the areas of maternal health, mental health, surgery, laboratories, counseling and testing. Wound dressing under direct supervision of nursing staff. Blood pressure, pulse and temperature measurements (if competent). Assist patients with activities such as getting them from one service point to another. Weighing patients, holding babies/adults to be weighed. General assistance to the medical staff wherever required, and wherever experience and expertise allow. Pre Medical students assist the local doctors and staff in doing basic tasks such as checking weight and temperature of the patients, cleaning wounds and also doing administrative tasks in the placement. 8. Child labor & Trafficking Project The goal of the Child Labor & Trafficking Project is to combat the endemic problem of child labour and trafficking in the fishing communities of Ghana through education, rehabilitation, and community empowerment. We provide educational sponsorship to current child labourers and children who have returned from being trafficked. We raise awareness on the dangers of child labour and trafficking and education sessions for parents, fisherman and community elders on the importance of a basic education for their children. The project also targets children’s rights, basic literacy, financial management, and community pride. This project is suitable for international students, groups and volunteers who are looking to do researches on the causes, dangers and effects of child labor and trafficking and to help provide the necessary interventions towards this phenomenon. Working Hours: Volunteers work 7 hours a day and 35 hours a week. Volunteers Roles & Responsibilities · Volunteers will involve working directly with children and their families, fishermen and schools to stop rampant child labour and trafficking practices in fishing communities around Senya Beraku. · Volunteers will conduct interviews with families, child labour and trafficking victims and the fishermen who hire them. · Volunteers/interns will help with the entering and analysing the data, attending meetings with community leaders to discuss findings, negotiating solutions to rescue children. · Writing project reports and proposals for donors and assisting with daily office duties. · Volunteers/Interns will also participate in the selection of children eligible for sponsorships to return to school. Supervision of Volunteers at the project site In Ghana, our field staff is an experienced team comprising of country coordinators, assistant coordinators, managers, cooks and field assistants. Our field staff visits volunteers regularly and always happy to help our volunteers in any way needed. Our staff are carefully screened, socially respected and experienced working with international volunteers. Also, volunteers are awarded certificate upon project completion by St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation (SMWEF Ghana). Accommodation and Living Conditions St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation strives to provide best of the living and other arrangements to its volunteers. Accommodation is either provided in an individual or shared room along with other volunteer, safe, clean and comfortable. By staying with a family you will experience the local Ghanaian culture, language customs and traditions. There are separate rooms for male and female volunteers with shared toilet facilities. Participants should note that living is of basic standard and you should not expect luxuries. Power cuts are common in Ghana and most rural houses do not have running water during times of drought. Bedding is provided, however, volunteers need to bring their own towels and mosquito nets (these can also be purchased in Ghana). Our host families are carefully screened and have experience hosting international volunteers and interns. We offer 3 meals a day of local and continental cuisine. Typically, volunteers eat breakfast and dinner at the home base (or host family) and have lunch at their project site. We offer fresh, nutritious and safe local foods to our volunteers to eat.
