One of the ways the Friends of Deer Flat complement the work of the Wildlife Refuge is to attend Refuge events and public engagement efforts as a welcoming and hospitable presence, providing information, insight, and a listening ear. The Friends are able to provide a unique perspective on the environment, the National Wildlife Refuge, and conservation in the surrounding Treasure Valley area. You will have the opportunity to interact with residents of all different backgrounds. The board for the Friends of Deer Flat is seeking dedicated individual(s) who would enjoy attending events as a representative of the Friends, coordinating with volunteers to set-up and tear down info/activity booths, and sharing the opportunities to serve with the volunteer community through creative and diverse means (VolunteerMatch for example!). Events are intermittent at this time, so ideally you are willing to communicate with volunteers and board members on a case by case basis. If you are interested in serving as a touch point with the community, visiting with guests, recruiting volunteers, and making an event feel special, please reach out.

The Friends are seeking community members with interest and experience serving on a non-profit board. All Board members take on the task of reviewing financial documents, maintaining legal requirements for nonprofits, and monitoring the ethical operation of the organization. Our organization is small and completely run by volunteers at this time. There are many opportunities to contribute. We are currently seeking individuals interested in choosing an area of specialization and focusing on that for a period of 2-3 years. Areas include but are not limited to: board development, maintaining digital records, volunteer coordination, event management, marketing and communication, web presence, community engagement, and compiling advocacy talking points. Board members will agree to volunteer approximately 4 hours a week to their task focus and will communicate regularly with eachother and with Refuge staff. Board members will uphold the mission to preserve, protect, and provide resources for Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. While the board positions will tend to be umbrella, we are also happy to work with individuals who are available to champion a specific project for a shorter duration of time ('ad hoc committee', 'champion'.)

One of the ways the Friends of Deer Flat complement the work of the Wildlife Refuge is to provide refreshments for volunteer projects and public engagement efforts. The board for the Friends of Deer Flat is seeking dedicated individual(s) who would enjoy selecting, shopping for, and delivering the snacks for meetings and events and making sure the appropriate plates/cups/utensils are available. This can be as simple or complex as you desire, within the budget of the event. We aim for events to be inclusive to different tastes, cultures, and dietary restrictions. Events are intermittent at this time, so ideally you are willing to communicate with volunteers and board members on a case by case basis. I know there is a big one coming up in November for our Annual meeting. If you are interested in serving the food, visiting with guests, recruiting volunteer servers, and making an event feel special, that is awesome but not necessary. The main thing we are looking for is someone to mastermind the refreshments.

Organization Information
Mission Statement
To promote, protect, and provide resources for Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge.
Description
In southwest Idaho’s Treasure Valley, surrounded by suburban homes and farmlands, Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge provides refuge for both wildlife and people. The refuge protects the Lake Lowell Unit and the Snake River Islands Unit to provide oases for migratory wildlife, including spectacular concentrations of mallards and Canada geese. The refuge also provides a place for people to slow down, relax and unwind.
Friends exist to support Deer Flat NWR, sharing the mission to preserve, protect, and provide resources for the land and animals therein through equitable and collaborative conservation with the surrounding community.
Our activities complement the work of the Fish and Wildlife Service by focusing on the work that the the Refuge System can’t do; giving and receiving funding for projects and programs, connecting with neighbors in the surrounding area, and advocating for America’s wildlife refuges locally and nationally, and more.
