Mission Statement
To provide healthy, nutritious meals to the most food-insecure county in Mississippi.
Description
Based out of Durant Elementary School in the Mississippi Delta, we serve a highly disadvantaged student population. 34% of children in Holmes County are food insecure-almost triple the national average. While all the students in Durant Elementary School are guaranteed free lunch given the considerably high poverty rate of the school, many children within the community continue to be plagued by food insecurity outside of school.
FFMS is going into its sixth year as a backpack feeding program, providing weekend meals throughout the entire school year to the most chronically food insecure children within the district. Partnering with Mississippi Food Network, a subsidiary of Feeding America, we facilitate the distribution of discreet end-of-the-week meal packages to chronically food-insecure school children. Each non-perishable package include two breakfast meals, two entrees, two juices, two fruits, and one dairy item. With 100% of donations going directly to the cost of packaging and delivering these meals, this program costs $5/child each weekend (~$180 for an entire school year).
