Mission Statement
Victory Garden Initiative builds communities that grow their own food, to create a community-led, socially just, environmentally sustainable, nutritious food system for all. We utilize our 1.5 acre urban farm to provide free produce to all community members. We also provide a number of educational programs for both youth and adults.
Description
Victory Garden Initiative was established in 2009 with the mission to help combat the negative effects of food deserts in Milwaukee by reclaiming vacant spaces to grow food. The 1.5 acre urban farm is located in Harambee which is one of the most underserved communities in Milwaukee. Everything grown in our garden is free to all community members and the garden is open at all times. We also have an annual program called the Great Milwaukee Blitz which takes place in the spring. This program allows people throughout Milwaukee County to register to have a raised garden bed delivered and built in their own backyards. The program is focused on low-income families, the cost of the raised garden bed is just $25. This year, in 2024, we were able to build over 300 raised garden beds for residential properties, retirement homes, schools, and churches. We also have a youth education program that teaches children through hands on experience about the importance of growing their own food. We offer an afterschool program as well as a summer program on our farm. Their are also a variety of adult education classes that are taught within our farmhouse.
