Through our Veterans Companion Program, Veterans will have the unique ability to support other Veterans who are terminally ill. Heartland Hospice Volunteers help to personalize, support and enhance the quality of life of those we visit. Bringing the gift of friendship to our patients through regular visits, these volunteers offer... Companionship by just being there with the patient and offering to talk or assist with non-medical tasks Emotional Support through listening, sharing experiences & stories, allowing for expression of feelings and offering words of comfort Respite Support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments or simply take time to care for themselves. We recognize that Veterans share a special bond. The goal of our Veterans Program is to match Veteran patients with a hospice trained Veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitation volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteers in our Veterans Program also receive additional training focused on a Veteran's specific needs. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability.

Our office volunteers truly support our hospice agency by assisting with organizational or clerical tasks to allow our staff more time to provide compassionate direct patient care. Needs for office volunteers include assisting with filing, mailings, data entry, etc. Also, there are special projects for volunteers with good computer skills. These projects may be making posters/flyers, newsletters, and various reference or marketing materials for the volunteer program. Occasionally, some projects may be completed from the volunteer's home.

The goal of hospice care is not to 'cure' but to provide comfort at the end of one's life. Together, our volunteers and staff strive to make life as comfortable and enjoyable as possible to the last moment. Volunteers are the heart of the Hospice Team. Hospice volunteers help to provide the extra care and support our clients and their families need at this time in their lives. A volunteer offers companionship and practical, caring help. Whether it's running errands, staying with the patient so family members can take a break, reading to patients, or holding their hand; you are needed. HOW MUCH OF A COMMITMENT WILL I BE ASKED TO MAKE? As a Heartland Hospice volunteer, you can donate as much or as little of your time as you desire. The duties of our volunteers are varied. This flexibility allows you to find an area of service that is uniquely suited to you. As a Hospice volunteer, you will be oriented to the Hospice philosophy and goals. This training will give you the foundation and skills needed to assist patients and their families. We invite you to consider becoming a Hospice volunteer! Heartland Hospice provides service to patients either in their own homes or in nursing facilities.
