Mission Statement
The Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County helps alleviate hunger and promote healthy eating for residents in need.
Description
Since 1998, we have been a cornerstone of support, offering supplemental food to up to one-third of households in our county. We operate on the belief that no one in Jeff Davis County should go hungry.
We live in a food desert where affordable fresh produce is scarce, but we stand out by sourcing fresh produce from a wholesale grocer. In 2023, we invested $46,548 in 102,480 pounds of fresh produce, making up nearly 40% of all the food we distributed.
Unfortunately, Jeff Davis County ranks #1 out of 254 counties in Texas for school-age child poverty and #6 nationally. Our public schools have no cafeterias and do not participate in the National School Lunch Program. We have three children's programs to address the issue. Our Pack-a-Lunch program is specifically designed for school-age food pantry clients. Kids Pantry at the JDC Library is a unique food pantry model of operation with no applications, no income guidelines, and no personal information collected. No judgment, no stigma. Open to all children - infant through high school graduation. Our In-School Snacks program provides daily, healthy, in-school snacks for all FDISD students.
We take pride in our innovative approach to addressing food insecurity in our community. Our remote location and small population don't limit our forward-thinking and client-centered approach. We are dedicated to serving our community without judgment, embracing kindness, compassion, empathy, and generosity in every action.
