Mission Statement
Harbor and Bridge is a United Methodist-based community center that embraces our responsibility to innovate, sponsor, and evaluate new forms of community that invite and encourage individuals to reach their fullest potential. We create space where neighbors can love and serve one another to create a safe and thriving neighborhood.
Description
Our primary task at Harbor and Bridge is to create opportunities for vital and natural connections between neighbors that build a genuine sense of community. We believe that living in a healthy community can heal individuals in powerful ways. "Real community," writes Seth Kaplan in his book Fragile Neighborhoods, "produces an ecosystem in which every member is deeply embedded...requires commitment to certain social norms and order," so that residents can have, "practical support when in need, day-to-day camaraderie, and a greater sense of security and belonging." Harbor and Bridge has used the space in an old church on the Near West side of Cleveland to be the setting for such an ecosystem of community to grow so that our neighbors might find that sense of security and belonging for the health of themselves and the overall neighborhood.
We host eight community groups from yoga, mindfulness, reiki, a food pantry and more. Additionally we run the Link-Up Bicycle Ministry to connect residents in need with a bicycle for transportation. We also run a hygiene ministry for guests to get showered and clean. Finally, we're looking forward to opening the new Recovery Home at Harbor and Bridge this summer to provide a safe, community-focused environment of recovery for our future guests.
