Our Mission Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) is dedicated to acquiring, developing, and stewarding properties in a way that respects the cultural and historical significance of Seattle’s Black community. Our work is rooted in the principles of self-determination, equity, and social justice, aiming to combat displacement and gentrification while creating thriving spaces for living, working, and cultural expression. Our Vision We envision a vibrant community where Black residents and businesses flourish, contributing to a dynamic ecosystem that supports economic opportunity, cultural preservation, and intergenerational wealth.

Description

Honoring the Past

Founded by concerned community members in 2016, ACLT has been a driving force in Seattle's Central District community since 2016 - tirelessly working to acquire and develop land assets necessary for the thriving of Seattle's Black community. Despite substantial obstacles and barriers, ACLT - in partnership with many community members - has achieved significant success in just a few short years through intentional and consistent strategies implemented to provide access to affordable housing and economic empowerment opportunities.

Our work is centered around a belief in the importance of community ownership. Through this approach, we have been able to secure land for affordable housing and community space, develop businesses, and support local entrepreneurs.

A Model for the Future

ACLT's approach to economic empowerment and community preservation addresses systemic barriers that have historically hindered the financial stability, growth and thriving of many of Seattle's Black communities. ACLT develops culturally responsive programs and strategies to provide equal access to opportunities for economic empowerment by addressing housing needs and providing long-term pathways to financial stability. As a result, we are able to create lasting change in the Central District and throughout the Seattle region.
