Volunteer in construction to overcome the desperate lack of infrastructure in Nepali schools and villages Help the people of Nepal through construction manual work. Most of the schools in rural Nepal consist of simple stone structures with no water or electricity. They have no bright classrooms, toilets or playgrounds, and no libraries. Most do not even have drinking water. Volunteer Society Nepal (VSN) places international volunteers for construction and manual work in the areas most in need. What does a construction manual work volunteer do? As a construction volunteer in Nepal, you may get involved in painting, constructing or repairing necessary buildings. These projects are usually funded by your own contributions. They may include painting, building or repairs on bathrooms, toilets, classrooms, gardens and health clinics, depending on the funding that is given. We need help in plumbing, painting and decorating, providing drinking water, gardening or creating playgrounds and sports fields. Volunteers will work alongside experts from the local community. Individual construction programs will often involve smaller construction projects such as painting, gardening or decorating. Volunteer as a Group or Individual? As a volunteer in the construction program, you often work as part of a volunteer team. Therefore this placement is perfect for a group that wants to work together. We also offer smaller projects to individual volunteers. Do I need any qualifications or skills to do this work? You do not need any specific skills for this placement but must be willing to muck in and get a bit dirty! You will mainly be doing work such as digging, mixing sand and cement, carrying rocks, sand and bricks, fetching water and painting. However, if you do have experience we will appreciate it and put your skills to good use. If you want to join in for a bigger construction project you might want to do some fundraising at home to provide the necessary materials and building tools. As the situation on the ground changes constantly, we ask that volunteers be flexible and adaptable when applying for this program.

Help raise awareness among Nepali youth on important issues as Environmental care, Climate, Recycling and Sustainability. As a volunteer you will give workshops at schools, set up youth clubs, talk with local supporters and set up awareness campaigns and cleanup events in the area. Do you want to make the planet a better place? Then this will be an incredible experience for you. The Environment in Nepal Urbanisation, development and tourism increases the production of waste in Nepal. Unfortunately, Nepal does not yet have all the systems in place to cope with this increase. Waste is either burnt, leading to bad air quality, or dumped haphazardly. This is having a serious effect on the health of Nepali people, on its land and water resources. There has been little education among the Nepali people about the influences of climate change, waste, littering and the effects of burning of plastic. Therefore, in many neighborhoods, you see people littering and garbage on the streets. However, nowadays, you see among the youth that there is a will to change things, but they don’t know where to start. What does a Climate Change Ambassador do? Volunteer Society Nepal is looking for people who want to share their knowledge about climate change with our projects in Nepal. Volunteer Society Nepal has started a project to educate and work together with youth clubs and schools in one area in Kathmandu, Nepal. The goal is to create awareness among youth and teach them about of the influence of climate change, littering, plastics, etc. And of course to make them ACT upon this! As a volunteer you will: Work with the local community and schools to plan, coordinate and manage the Litter-Free Neighborhood Program. Assist the schools and community with the waste collection drives and trashtag challenges Assist in developing and carrying out various waste management training and programs for the community Build networks and strengthen relations with community members Work with the local schools, develop and give workshops on climate change Make pictures and promote small events on Facebook and Instagram. Do I need any specific skills or qualifications for this placement? You just need to bring your skills and knowledge of the environment that you learned since you were a kid. You need to be a pro-active person with lots of good ideas to get a community and/or group of youth interested in a common goal. Of course Volunteer Society Nepal will help you with this. And last but not least: you will need to be culturally sensitive with strong interpersonal and communication skills and the confidence to create positive relationships in very diverse working environments.

Volunteering in the Buddhist Monastery program is tailored for individuals who have a keen interest in religious culture and are willing to teach English at the monastery for a minimum of two weeks or more. Volunteer Society Nepal(VSN) arranges for longer stays upon request. During their stay, volunteers will spend approximately two to three hours each day teaching English to both young and old Buddhist monks. The monks, in turn, will impart their knowledge and culture to the volunteers. The program also includes meditation sessions and visits to Hindu and Buddhist holy sites. For the first three days, the volunteer will take intensive language classes, as well as teacher training, every day at the Volunteer Society Nepal(VSN) Office in Kathmandu. The monks will be able to speak both languages, so it is really a matter of the volunteers’ preference; however, most people find Nepali easier to learn. The volunteers will visit holy sites around the Kathmandu Valley. After one week, they will be placed with a host family near the monastery, depending on the availability of a place to stay in the monastery, where they will stay for a total of six weeks or more. This program combines religious research through an experiential approach with volunteer English teaching. Due to the fact that the monks spend their lives inside the monastery, this program provides them with the amazing opportunity to learn English, as well as experience another culture, from an international volunteer. In Nepal, Buddhism is a way of life. For many people, volunteering in a Buddhist monastery is a way to give back to their community and connect with their religion. Monasteries in Nepal are often located in remote areas, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Monasteries in remote areas provide volunteers with an opportunity to disconnect from technology and connect with nature. It could be a meditative experience for an individual . Volunteers typically help with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening. They may also lead or participate in meditation sessions and other religious ceremonies. Volunteering in a Buddhist monastery is a great way to learn about Buddhism and Nepali culture. In your role as a volunteer English teacher for Buddhist monks in a monastery, your main responsibility will be to instruct the monks in the English language. You will dedicate 2-4 hours each day to teaching English to the monks. You are highly encouraged to facilitate discussions and debates, as this will significantly enhance your proficiency in understanding and speaking English.
