Mission Statement
Words are power. The Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate Program champions youth voices by providing platforms for literacy, self-expression, civic engagement, and leadership through free creative writing and performance opportunities. Through the transformative power of the written and spoken word, the Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate Program provides young, creative voices, the tools, training, and platforms to rewrite the narratives that shape their lives and their communities.
Description
The Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate Program is designed to award a young poet (14-18) the title of Youth Poet Laureate who is well versed in poetic expression, exemplifies a deep understanding of poetic language, exhibits uniqueness and newness, and shows appreciation for all art forms. Established in 2022, the program has reached over 900 people, led creative writing and publishing classes for over 190 teenagers, worked with libraries, educational institutions, community centers, civil rights activist groups, and more, and has been recognized by the Montgomery County Commissioners, the Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, the Biden Administration, and more.
