Mission Statement

The goal of MELODIES OF LIBERATION is to safely and securely empower Afghan women and girls who have been thoroughly and often violently silenced since the Taliban takeover. We aim to bring their stories, dreams, and fears to the wider world. We are currently gathering poetry and lyrics written by Afghan girls and women while maintaining the security of public anonymity. This allows the authors to speak out about their situation without fear of Taliban reprisal while ensuring that their authorship is protected. Our goal is to give these women and girls’ poems reach and influence on a global scale through their use by international artists with recordings and performances of various types in English and/or their original Dari or Pashto. By helping the words of some of the most repressed but resilient women in the world today, we hope to make their experiences and ideals undeniable.

Description

MELODIES OF LIBERATION is headed by Dr. Benjamin Wu, former Artistic Director at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music. Currently we have a library of over 100 poems from Afghan female poets in Afghanistan, or who have recently left Afghanistan. Our priority right now is to get those poems translated into English in a way that can be used by English speaking songwriters. We are also looking to revamp our website, and create a logo.
