Mission Statement
The Alexandria Seaport Foundation build skills, self-worth, and community for young adults, ages 18-23, who need direction and support.
Description
Seaport apprentices enter the program as "disconnected youth" - a term used by researchers to identify young adults who are separated from education systems, the workforce, or their communities. They may have dropped out of school, been unable to find work, been involved in the criminal justice system, have mental or physical health challenges, and/or have family care-giving responsibilities. They typically come from unstable home environments. The goal of the Seaport program is to provide its apprentices with the capabilities needed to join the labor force or pursue more education and become long-term "connected" citizens who lead stable, healthy, economically secure lives. ASF serves its mission and its apprentices through three main activities:
1. Provide each apprentice with the level of woodworking and carpentry skills that enables them to secure an entry-level job with the Carpenter’s Union or within the trades industry.
2. Ensure that each apprentice masters workplace skills to support employment objectives, to include increasing apprentices' ability to successfully complete assessments (fex: GED).
3. Facilitate work experiences (internships, externships, community projects and job placement support) that improve the capacity of struggling young adults to obtain and maintain high-quality, skilled employment.
