Mission Statement

The Museum of the Peace Corps Experience collects and preserves stories and objects of material culture donated by volunteers who serve in communities around the globe. It fosters cultural understanding through education and promotes research on the impact of Peace Corps, encouraging visitors to serve--wherever they live, however they can.

Description

Since 2000, the Museum has amassed an important collection of material culture, historical artifacts, and literature. Our temporary exhibitions and programming have reached diverse audiences across the nation. The Museum’s goal is to promote peace education and exposure to world cultures with exhibits, story-telling and experiential learning opportunities.

In his executive order creating the Peace Corps in 1961, President John F. Kennedy wrote: "For every young American who participates in the Peace Corps-who works in a foreign land-will know that he or she is sharing in the great common task of bringing to man that decent way of life which is the foundation of freedom and a condition of peace." Today, the Peace Corps has sustained its visionary mission for 61 years, inspiring 240,000 Americans to tackle the challenges of living and working in impoverished communities in 143 developing nations. How-and why-they achieved all this is an important question that the museum will explore with a permanent exhibition space, educational programming and research activities.
