Mission Statement

The Mission of the Volcano Art Center is to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii's people and the environment through activities in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Our vision is to be recognized worldwide as a unique cultural and environmental center with high-quality programs and facilities, to inspire the creativity of all who come in contact with Kilauea and the people of Hawai’i.

Description

Volcano Art Center (VAC) is rooted in recognition of the abundant artistic talent in the Kilauea region as well as the community’s desire to experience, view, and study art in its many forms. In 1974, with the cooperation of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, VAC’s founding artists renovated the 1877 Volcano House to create a dynamic gallery and present the art of Kilauea. Thus, the non-profit Volcano Art Center was born. From these modest yet energetic beginnings, VAC transitioned into a complete arts education and community center with the 1998 addition of the campus at Niaulani in Volcano Village. The campus now houses an administrative office, an arts education building, a small gallery, a demonstration old-growth native forest, and a sculpture garden.

Programs have grown considerably since VAC’s inception. Volcano Art Center has fostered visual and performing arts, some of which have flourished (such as 2-D and 3-D artworks, music performances, ceramics, drawing, painting, and other classes). In 2021, we started the Liko A’e Program for children, including after-school art classes. In 2022, we added the Liko A’e Summer Program, a summer youth arts camp.
