Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists through education, community service, and better infrastructure.
Description
Florida consistently ranks in the top three states for the most pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. With our beautiful weather, millions of visitors, and the rise in distracted and aggressive driving, it has become a recipe for disaster. Over 20 years ago, community members concerned about safety for people who walk, run, and bike got together to make positive changes in our community. We have two keystone projects: building the Paradise Coast Trail, which will be a 70-mile paved trail that is separated from the road; and ending distracted driving with our Hands-Free Florida campaign to expand hands-free cell phone use while driving.
We host two fundraiser bike ride/walk events each year to fund our mission. The Iron Joe Turkey Ride & Walk is always the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and the Naples Bike Brunch & Walk is always the first Sunday in March. Both events draw between 350 and 500 participants, and we need many volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. Folks tell us that volunteering with us at our events is a lot fun. You meet great people, enjoy delicious food, and our participants are grateful and friendly.
We have one paid staff member and an active, all-volunteer board of directors. We need other ongoing volunteer support with letter writing, social media and marketing, fundraising, and community service projects.
