Mission Statement
The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (SCAWC) was founded in 1973. Our mission is to provide and promote the humane treatment of animals through humane education, animal protection, and community service. Our duty is to the orphaned, abused, neglected, and unwanted animals of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.
Description
The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (SCAWC) was founded in 1973, and it is the only open-admission animal shelter on the island of St. Croix. Our programs work to provide care to animals in need, combat the root causes of animal overpopulation, and help pets stay in their homes with the families who love them.
In 2016, SCAWC opened our low-cost community clinic. Although SCAWC's ability to expand the clinic was severely impeded by Hurricane Maria destroying our permanent facility in 2017 (and our subsequent move to a temporary facility), we have grown this program exponentially over the last five years. In 2022 alone, we provided low-cost veterinary care to over 2,300 animals, and have served over 15,000 owned animal patients since the clinic's inception.
