Mission Statement
Cultivate Charlottesville engages youth and community in building an equitable, sustainable food system through garden-based experiential learning, growing and sharing healthy food, amplifying community leaders, and advocating for food justice.
Description
Cultivate Charlottesville aims to empower individuals to create a healthy and equitable food system - personally, in community, and across systems and structures. We do this through an integrated approach from three core programs:
City Schoolyard Garden, founded in 2010. City Schoolyard Garden engages with Charlottesville City Schools through garden based experiences which become the building blocks of urban agriculture and food justice for students in CCS schools.
Urban Agriculture Collective, which began as the Quality Community Council in 2007. The Urban Agriculture Collective team grows and maintains production gardens throughout Charlottesville. UAC can produce over 10,000 pounds of organic food per year which gets distributed to low income and subsidized neighborhoods for free on scheduled market days.
Food Justice Network, launched in 2015. In 2018 we came together to implement a coordinated approach for amplified impact working with public policy and collaboration with the community to help make Charlottesville a city with better food accessibility and address intersecting issues.
