Mission Statement
Educate Florida seniors in fraud prevention. Resolve civil issues for Florida seniors involving money loss to an individual or a business at no cost. Assist the Florida Attorney General with tasks, sting operations, and survey data.
Description
The Seniors vs. Crime Project is a non-profit sponsored by Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth in 1989 as a way to reinforce the message of crime prevention and to provide methods by which Florida’s senior population could be alerted to consumer fraud, con games, and other criminal acts. The intent was to use volunteers to work with Florida seniors to educate them to avoid fraud.
In 2001 we added direct assistance to seniors who have been cheated in a civil matter. Think of a building contractor who cheated a couple out of $120,000 by not doing the work. After we determine the facts, we would try to get the money returned or the work performed. We take any size case at no charge.
Volunteers can:
- Expect to go out into the community at group presentations or senior expos to share their knowledge of scams and how to avoid them.
- Expect to work cases from an office, typically located within a law enforcement agency, to return money to Florida seniors.
- Expect to be well trained for either making educational presentations or working cases, or both.
