Mission Statement

Young Children--Priority One, doing business as Nutrition 4 Young Children (N4YC), seeks to educate and connect families to maximize the health and well-being of children prebirth through age 5 in Polk County, Iowa. We aim to: Show community support for pregnant women and parents of young children who are struggling on a limited income, and Encourage them to participate in local events and programs that will enhance their children's well-being and brain development.

Description

N4YC sponsors eight virtual community baby showers a year, in English and Spanish, for pregnant women in limited income households in Polk County, IA. These "showers" are interactive prenatal nutrition lessons, because studies have shown that instruction in prenatal nutrition is often incomplete or lacking for mothers-to-be. In addition to prenatal nutrition, the showers provide an overview of community resources for young families in Polk. After a virtual shower, the attendees receive a backpack of infant supplies worth about $150. To keep parents connected, N4YC offers an informational website, a Face Book page, and a twice-monthly e-newsletter.
