Mission Statement
Charlotte Street centers Kansas City’s most forward-thinking visual artists, writers, and performers--acting as the primary incubator, provocateur, and connector for the region’s contemporary arts community, and its leading advocate on the national stage.
Description
Established in 1997 as an award to honor visual artists, Charlotte Street has spent over 25 years developing a comprehensive slate of programs that aim to holistically support artists of all disciplines and career stages. Incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2003, Charlotte Street offers platforms that proactively respond to critical needs expressed by artists: helping them connect with one another, grow supportive audience bases, and gain access to further resources and networks. Charlotte Street now serves as a preeminent resource for Kansas City artists by providing direct financial support in the form of grants, awards, and commissions; free studios and exhibition/performance spaces for theater, dance, music, film, and visual artists; and public programming that facilitates dynamic encounters between artists, audiences, and their communities. Charlotte Street also acts as a bridge between the local arts community and regional and national philanthropic cultural leaders.
In 2021, Charlotte Street established its first permanent home, a campus in the Volker/Roanoke corridor of Midtown Kansas City. The campus features a museum-quality visual art gallery, performance and rehearsal spaces, artist studios, administrative offices, a library, and community gathering areas. Bringing all the core activities of Charlotte Street together under one roof has offered unprecedented opportunities for new forms of collaboration, experimentation, and community care.
