Mission Statement

Improve well-being and promote independence throughout life's stages with quality and compassion.

Meritan, Inc. was originally chartered by the State of Tennessee in 1961 as The Senior Citizens Center. As such, its purpose was to centralize the work of community groups that address the needs of the aging population in Memphis. Shortly thereafter, The Senior Citizens Center expanded its scope and became Senior Citizen Services. As a result of the growth and expansion of services, the agency became Meritan in 2007. "Meritan" was derived from "merit" and "samaritan" to reflect the agency’s core value of helping others. Meritan was the first organization to receive a state grant to provide homemaker services in 1969. This began Meritan’s tradition of helping the elderly with some of their most basic needs: meal preparation, personal care, housekeeping, and errands. In 1974, Meritan began providing employment services to seniors under the Title V Older Americans Act. This program is designed to help low-income, unemployed individuals over the age of 55 find work.

Today, Meritan’s services have expanded to include the following programs that support older adults, children, and individuals with disabilities: In-Home and Community-Based Services, Home Health, Elder Abuse Victim Services, Specialized Foster Care, Residential Services, and the Senior Community Service Employment Program. Each year, Meritan serves over 1,700 individuals in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Georgia.
