A common thread essential to humans throughout our lives is companionship. Companionship is the one "ask" people utilizing hospice care mention they would like to have more of. As a Life Companion, you appreciate that a person in hospice wants to continue to live a wholehearted life and would benefit from the gift of camaraderie! For a few hours each week, you will get to spend quality time with a Uni Care Hospice patient currently living independently or in an Assisted Living, Memory Care, or Skilled Nursing Facility, who might not otherwise have a friend visit often. Life Companions might join the patient to do an activity hosted by the facility, listen to their favorite music, play a card or board game, take a stroll with them down memory lane, and most importantly, be there to share the experience of life! Key Responsibilities: Provide companionship to a person in hospice care. Be creative and open to learning. Listen and observe attentively to get to know the person you are visiting. Share mutual interests, conversation, and mealtimes with patient. Collaborate with hospice staff and interdisciplinary team for training, mentoring, and to provide continuity of service to the patient. Scheduling Visits: Varies depending on the patient’s needs and your availability. When matching you to a patient, volunteer services staff will take into consideration your schedule, location, and similar interests.

Do you have an extra 1-2 hours in your week to give back to your community? Become a hospice volunteer today! Being the caregiver for a family member or friend in hospice is a commitment of love and loyalty. Many times, a caregiver hesitates to leave a loved one to run a simple errand, such as grocery shopping, or take time for much needed self-care, like getting a haircut. But you can change that! When you care for the caregiver, you give the caregiver the essential gift of "me time!" Providing them with the opportunity for a few hours of respite helps them rejuvenate, reconnect, and reinforce their purpose as a caregiver. In turn, you get to share experienceswith a Uni Care Hospice patient who might want to tell their life story or reminisce (you can film them doing that or take their photograph), engage in their favorite hobby -- anything they enjoy from puzzle building, crafting, making music, reading, writing, or simply sitting with them during a mealtime, joining them for a walk in the fresh air, or holding their hand. Make a meaningful difference in someone's life today.

Veterans and active military members and their families share an unwavering bond. At Uni Care Hospice, we honor that camaraderie and match volunteers and patients who are veterans or active military members. Check out the Uni Care Hospice volunteer opportunities listed on VolunteerMatch.org (Care for the Caregiver, Life Companion, Pet Therapy Team, Complementary Therapy Provider, and Hospice Staff and Admin Support) for specific details about each opportunity that correlates with ways to support veteran and active military hospice patients and their families. Feel free to contact us for more information and to share ideas about how you can help. As a Level Three Partner in the We Honor Veterans * program, it is an honor to provide care and services for our Veterans and their families. We care for Veterans by recognizing their service and the impact that their service may have at the end of life. The Uni Care Hospice team realizes our Veteran patients may experience service-related diseases or illnesses that may affect them from both clinical and benefits perspectives. As a result, care is tailored to meet these needs. Our Veteran patients are recognized with certificates of service and pinning ceremonies as well as being offered Veteran memorial services. * We Honor Veterans is a collaboration between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help improve the care Veterans receive from hospice and palliative care providers.
