Mission Statement

The Equal Vote Coalition’s mission is to promote true equality in the vote. We conduct and support top-notch research, educate communities, and build coalitions. Our five core principles for electoral reform mandate that proposals we support empower Honesty, Equality, Accuracy, Expressiveness, and Simplicity. These criteria form the basis by which we evaluate and advance proposals for better voting.

The Equal Vote Coalition was founded with the goal of discovering the true meaning of One Person, One Vote. This helped lead to the invention of STAR Voting, a new voting method and our champion proposal designed to eliminate vote-splitting and provide all voters with an equally weighted vote.

Since Equal Vote's inception in 2014, we have steadily grown to include a diverse network from around the world and from a variety of backgrounds within the voting and election reform communities. We welcome volunteers with many different skillsets from outreach to research to video production to software development. In particular, we're seeking volunteers who can provide professional-level aid with graphic design and front-end web design.

Equal Vote has a sister nonprofit, STAR Voting Action, that focuses on supporting campaigns to adopt STAR Voting in public elections and everywhere else people vote. There is an ongoing STAR Voting ballot initiative collecting signatures through July 2024 for the statewide ballot in Oregon. Additionally, we are launching a local ballot initiative for STAR Voting in Eugene that will be collecting signatures over Summer 2023. We are looking for volunteer canvassers to collect signatures on both initiatives. Collecting signatures is a fantastic way to plug in and make an immediate and direct impact as a volunteer.
