Mission Statement
Chicago Dance Crash is a hip hop/contemporary dance company that both explores and exploits the potential of human response and athleticism through live performance. The Company develops a wider appreciation within the community for street and concert dance as not only an influential art form, but also as an accessible form of entertainment.
Description
Founded by Illinois State University alums, the company has been best recognized by both its eclectic "fusing" of different movement forms as well as their emphasis in keeping an easy-to-swallow entertainment value in their works. Not surprisingly, these efforts towards mass appeal gives significance to a presence of pop culture in their works like topical humor/issues and familiar music as well as a healthy dose of physicality and athleticism.
Dance Crash’s eclectic style, not surprisingly, results in a diverse team of creators and performers year-after-year. Guest choreographers hail from training backgrounds including London, LA and Chicago’s Southside while costumers will specialize in "steampunk" and set designers will include some of the city’s most established graffiti artists (just to cite a few examples). Original hip hop tracks are often commissioned by the company to unsigned Chicago rappers and producers while narrative creation and voiceovers are typically hired from the city’s deeply talented theatre scene. Chicago Dance Crash has always contracted a racially diverse ensemble - whether it be for performances at home or abroad or for late-night battles, mid-morning school shows or primetime productions, ensuring that the people of Chicago are well represented onstage.
