Mission Statement

We are Surf Cerrito, a non-profit organisation that strives to empower boys and girls from the North Peruvian community of Cerrito de la Virgen through surfing. We aim to give children from Cerrito de la Virgen the opportunity to experience the incredible benefits of the ocean by learning to surf the waves of Huanchaco, a World Surfing Reserve.

Description


Studies have shown the positive impacts of physical activity on mental wellbeing and Surfing is now regarded as a form of therapy by doctors and psychiatrists around the world. That is why it is so important to give kids from low income backgrounds the opportunity to access the ocean and reap all of its amazing benefits.

Most of the kids of Cerrito, despite being so close, do not have access to the water, due to financial difficulties, inability to swim, family issues and a general mentality that the sea is not their space to enjoy. Through engaging lessons by two qualified surf instructors we are harnessing the power of the water as a tool for mental and physical development. As well as surf lessons, we also provide a safe space to talk about our emotional wellbeing, with the beginning of the session being dedicated to healthy discussion together.
